Where to Stay in Istanbul: Sultanahmet, Taksim or Kadıköy for a First Visit

For a first visit with a lot of sightseeing, stay in Sultanahmet, the Old City. For restaurants, nightlife and easy ferries, choose Taksim, Galata or Karaköy. For a local feel on the Asian side, choose Kadıköy, which is also the closest of the three to Sabiha Gökçen (SAW). From Istanbul Airport (IST) a private transfer costs from €46 to Sultanahmet, €42 to Taksim and €55 to Kadıköy per car.

Sultanahmet: the Old City
Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, Topkapı Palace, the Basilica Cistern and the Grand Bazaar are all within walking distance, so you spend your days seeing things rather than travelling. The area is busy by day and quiet at night, with fewer places open late. The T1 tram runs from here to Karaköy and Kabataş.
Good for: a first trip of two or three days, families, anyone who wants the sights on the doorstep. Less good for: evenings out.
Taksim and Beyoğlu
Taksim Square and İstiklal Avenue are the city's busiest streets for shopping, restaurants and bars, and they stay lively late into the night. From Taksim the F1 funicular goes down to Kabataş, where the T1 tram continues to the Old City. Of the three main areas, Taksim is the closest to Istanbul Airport.
Good for: couples and friends who want evenings out. Less good for: light sleepers on the main streets.
Galata and Karaköy
Downhill from Taksim, Galata and Karaköy mix the Galata Tower, galleries and cafés with the waterfront and the Galataport cruise terminal. The T1 tram reaches Sultanahmet in a few stops, and ferries cross to Kadıköy from Karaköy, so this is a good compromise between sights and evenings.
Kadıköy and Moda, on the Asian side
Kadıköy has the city's best-known food market, bars and the seaside walk at Moda, with a more local feel and often lower hotel prices. Ferries to Karaköy and Eminönü take about 20 minutes and are part of the fun. Kadıköy is the closest of these areas to Sabiha Gökçen; from Istanbul Airport the drive crosses the Bosphorus and takes longer.
