Layover in Istanbul (2026): Can You See the City Between Flights?

With about 10 hours or more between flights at Istanbul Airport (IST) you can spend a few hours in the Old City; with less than 8 hours it is usually too tight. Allow about an hour to get out of the airport, about 55 minutes each way to Sultanahmet outside rush hour, and plan to be back 3 hours before an international departure. A private transfer costs from €46 per car each way, and Turkish Airlines passengers with a 6 to 24 hour layover can ask about the free Touristanbul tour.
How much time a city visit really takes
A layover in the city is a chain of steps, and most of the time goes on the steps around the visit rather than the visit itself. These are our planning figures for Istanbul Airport (IST) and the Old City:
| Step | Allow |
|---|---|
| From the gate to the arrivals hall (passport control, and bags if they are not checked through) | 45 to 60 minutes |
| Drive from IST to Sultanahmet | About 55 minutes outside rush hour |
| Drive back to IST | About 55 minutes; 90 minutes or more on weekday evenings |
| Back at IST before an international departure | 3 hours (our suggestion; check your airline's check-in deadline) |
| Total around the visit | About 6 hours |
So a 10-hour layover leaves roughly 4 hours in the city, and an 8-hour layover about 2. Drive times are estimates: Istanbul traffic can make them much longer, and nobody can guarantee an arrival time.
What is realistic, by layover length
| Layover | What we would do |
|---|---|
| Under 6 hours | Stay airside. Passport control twice and the traffic leave no real time in the city. |
| 6 to 8 hours | Tight. The Touristanbul tour (below) is the easiest option, because its timings are built around the airport. |
| 8 to 12 hours | 2 to 5 hours in Sultanahmet: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern are all within a short walk. |
| 12 hours or overnight | Book a hotel in the city and a transfer both ways, or a car with driver for 8 or 10 hours. |
Before you leave the airport
- Entry to Türkiye: leaving the airport means passing passport control. Citizens of many countries can enter visa-free for short stays; others need an e-Visa, which you apply for only on the official site evisa.gov.tr before you fly. Check your nationality on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa page.
- Bags: if your bags are checked through to your final destination you only carry hand luggage, which makes a city visit much easier.
- Your next flight: keep the boarding pass or booking reference handy and note the check-in deadline for the second flight.
- Payment: our transfers are paid in cash to the driver at the end of the ride, in EUR, TRY or USD.
Three ways to get into the city
1. Touristanbul, the Turkish Airlines layover tour
Turkish Airlines runs a free guided city tour for passengers with a layover of 6 to 24 hours at IST who fly between two international destinations on one Turkish Airlines ticket (ticket number starting with 235, both flights on the same booking). It includes transport, an English-speaking guide, a meal and museum entry. Tours run at fixed times, for example 08:30 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 21:30; the Bosphorus tour runs from 1 April to 31 October only. You register at the desk in the arrivals hall opposite meeting point 4 after passport control, at least 30 minutes before the tour starts, or online. Conditions change, so check the Touristanbul page before you travel.
2. A private transfer there and back
If you do not fly Turkish Airlines, or want your own timing, book a transfer from IST to the Old City and a second one back. Economy costs from €46 per car for up to 3 passengers, and a van for up to 7 from €64. Book both legs together and the return leg is 10% off. We track your arriving flight, and the first 60 minutes after landing are free, so a slow passport queue costs nothing. At IST, walk out through Exit 13; our team waits at the 3E sign with your name.
For the way back, choose a pickup time that gets you to IST 3 hours before departure, and add time if you leave the city on a weekday evening. Afternoon pickups at IST between 15:00 and 19:00 cost 30% more.
3. A car with driver for 8 or 10 hours
For a long layover, a car with driver stays with you all day: from the airport to the Old City, along the Bosphorus and back, and waits for you between stops. Fuel, tolls and parking are included; each hour over the package is charged at the extra hour rate for your vehicle. See the chauffeur service page, or book below.
Book a car with driver
Choose a package and a vehicle type. Prices are per vehicle for the whole package.
Public transport also works when you have time to spare: the Havaist HVL-11 bus goes from IST to Sultanahmet in about 75 to 120 minutes without a change. On a short layover it is a risk, because a delay on the way back cannot be made up.
A few hours in the Old City
Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome and the Basilica Cistern are a few minutes' walk apart in Sultanahmet, so even 3 hours are enough to see two or three of them. Mosques close to visitors during prayer times. Topkapı Palace is closed on Tuesdays and the Grand Bazaar on Sundays. More ideas: must-see places in Istanbul and what to eat in Istanbul.
Changing airports instead?
If your second flight leaves from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), you are not on a layover but changing airports: the drive takes about 80 minutes outside rush hour. Read transfer between IST and SAW for the planning times.
Transfer prices for this trip: IST → Sultanahmet transfer · IST → Taksim / Beyoğlu transfer · IST ↔ SAW transfer
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave Istanbul Airport during a layover?
Yes, if you are allowed to enter Türkiye: you pass passport control, and depending on your nationality you enter visa-free or with an e-Visa from evisa.gov.tr. You then check in again for your next flight.
How long a layover do I need to see Istanbul?
About 10 hours gives you roughly 4 hours in the Old City. Getting out of the airport, the drive both ways and being back 3 hours before an international departure take about 6 hours together.
Is the Turkish Airlines Touristanbul tour free?
Yes, for eligible passengers: a 6 to 24 hour layover at IST between two international flights on one Turkish Airlines ticket. Check the current conditions on the Touristanbul page.
Can I book an airport transfer for a layover?
Yes. Give your arriving flight number so we can track it, and book the return pickup at a time that gets you back to IST 3 hours before departure. Booking both legs together takes 10% off the return.
